Healthy nails for the cold season

In winter, nails can become more brittle and weak due to the weather drying your skin out. Your nails are made up of some of the same cells that your skin has, so while you are spending all that time keeping your skin moisturised and supple, you should be doing the same for your nails.

Healthy foods

• Eating healthy foods rich in Vitamin A can keep nails strong and healthy, examples of these are eggs, milk, butter, chicken, fish oil and liver
• If you have white spots under your nail plate, eat foods with vitamin B and zinc

Vitamin B is in organ meats such as liver or kidney, fish, avocados and Bananas or seeds, nuts, chickpeas and whole grain

  More food sources for good nail health: 

• Vitamin C in citrus fruits and dark green vegetables.
• Folic acid is plentiful in orange juice and green vegetables.
• Essential fatty acids which are found in fatty fish such as tuna and salmon are great for dryness.

Protection at home
When you are washing the dishes, gardening or doing anything at home that requires detergents and chemicals, you should always wear rubber gloves. This will provide protection not only for your nails but also for your hands.

Products that can help

• To keep you nails strong and healthy, use a cuticle cream or oil on the cuticle once to twice a week. This helps the cuticle stay strong and provide a stronger nail underneath.
• When putting nail polish on your nails, always use a base polish underneath to protect from staining and damage. Always use a top coat on top of the colour to protect from splitting.
• When you file your nails, always do the movement on the edge one way not both ways as this can cause splitting or ridges down the nail's plate.
